Decimated forest

Let’s hit the shops, get online,
and spend, spend, spend.
If you’re short of money, the bank will “help” –
lend, lend, lend.

50% off, the price they increased,
everything in store.
Elbows pointed, credit card ready,
sprinting through the door.

Some new trainers, another hoodie,
a baseball cap from Nike.
Scramble quickly for max discount,
for stuff you barely like.

Get some things, shiny and new,
that you do not really need.
If they’re a bargain, or two for one,
it doesn’t count as greed.

A bigger TV, a Ninja air fryer,
Another pair of jeans.
Get in quick, find a deal,
spend beyond our means.

A Nespresso machine, a new handbag,
one for the Christmas do.
A little black dress, high-heeled shoes,
Be quick to beat the queue.

Another Alexa, for the downstairs loo,
twenty quid, she said.
Up in the loft, the utility room,
or put one in the shed.

You can’t have too many of them,
great for a shopping list.
Dotted about, listening in,
waiting to assist.

Or why not get some more,
cushions for the bed?
Fluffy towels, Lush candles,
new Hunters with better tread.

Stuff that we could do without,
Surplus to requirement.
Stuff that, if not consumed,
Would better our environment.

So maybe we should think of this,
Before the world turns black.
Fridays become a thing of the past,
And there is no turning back.

Or continue on this path well-trod,
This exercise in excess.
Leave our problems at the door,
For the future to address.
